The Lower Owens is open all year; the fall and winter fishing is usually very good. The flow is holding at 450 cfs. This is still fishable but wading in many sections is difficult if not impossible. It is unusual for the flows to be this low this time of year; usually it is up to 600 to 700 cfs. If the flows stay at this level should have good fishing throughout the summer. The weather has been very hot during the day; temperature over 100 degrees. Best fishing will be in the early morning and in the evening. Look for mayfly and caddis action. Can have good action on sreamers. Try Olive, Brown, and Black Wooly Buggers. When fishing streamers will most likely get a lot more hits than landed fish. Nymph fishing with small patterns usually works well. Be prepared for all kinds of weather. Be aware of New Zealand Mud Snail problem (see opening paragraph). This area not significantly impacted by storms since the flow is controlled out of Pleasant Valley Reservoir. With any storm activity the access roads will be muddy. Cars can get stuck.
