FACE MASKS REQUIRED PER INYO COUNTY

Don’t forget a jacket

We’ve jumped thru the hoops to get boat rentals up and going along with the tackle, souvenirs, snack and cold drinks. We got the chlorination system in and have passed all those tests. Now to figure out the Café – might have a bit of a change in the menu as we don’t think the cooks will survive in the hot kitchen wearing a mask – so stay tuned. Have NO FEAR pie and ice cream will be on the take-out menu.

We’ve got both boats and pontoons on the water and boy, have we been busy – THANK YOU!!!. And fishing has been awesome, both from boats and the shore with great stockings from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. We’ve seen lots of fish heading to the smoker or grill over the last week and heard of many caught and released. What’s working you ask – the normal – NightCrawlers, Salmon Eggs (as we have some RainBow species currently spawning), PowerBait, KastMaster and lots of people’s favorite the Red/Gold Thomas Buoyant.

Private campgrounds have opened – that would be Creekside RV Park (on the South Lake Road), Brown’s Town (north of the golf course), the FairGrounds (full hook-ups), Highlands RV Park (heading north out of Bishop) MillPond (north of Bishop) and Pleasant Valley Campground (over by Pleasant Valley Reservoir). As far as the US Forest Service campgrounds are concerned, we know there are campground hosts at some of the Bishop Creek Canyon campgrounds, but still do NOT have a date when they will officially open. Nor do we have a date on when the restrooms will open – this includes the restroom at the end of our parking lot. Unfortunately, the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing restroom is in personal living areas and that’s off-limits.

Friends Chris Gaskill, Brad Daugherty and Charlie Well were out on the Lake early using Thomas Buoyants and caught a great trout dinner. Alisha, Chad, Josh and Trevor had an awesome day catching and releasing and keeping enough for a couple of dinners using “Rubber Eggs” (it was a betting bait – betcha can’t catch a fish on a rubber eggs – betcha I can), Salmon Eggs and Spinners. Lou Ramirez landed a 3-1/4 pounder using green PowerBait. Vincent Baltierra hooked up with Tiffany Lopez to catch a 3-1/2 pounder and a few others using RainBow PowerBait.

We’ve had a bit of weather in over the last two week. A bit of snow in the high country translating into rain down at our level. Also, have had a few good thunderboomers and lightning storms along with some good windy days. Temps dropped quite a bit over the last few days and we’ve had the wood stove going strong.

Southern California Edison has a project going on the dam. The project is on the spillway – this is the reason the water is a bit on the low side – they need dry land on the Lake side of the spillway to maneuver around with their equipment.

We’re hearing some good rumblings that there may be a firework show at the Bishop airport this year. It’s not going to look like the years gone by – no personal fireworks, BBQ, etc, but the event will be FREE! Stay tuned for more info soon!

Some things have changed regarding wilderness permits – you can check the new info out here at the United States Forest Service – Inyo National Forest website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/inyo/passes-permits/recreation. It looks like the trail into the Sabrina Basin is pretty much snow free – maybe a patch or two of snow in the shade of a Pine, but watch out for those stream crossings. They slowed down a bit over the past couple of day due to the cold weather, but should start picking back up with the rising temps. Please check the weather report prior to heading into the backcountry for an overnighter or two. Might want to hike with a buddy. Put a note in your car about where you were headed and when you think you’ll return.

And now for the weather – you can check it out for yourself at www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA in the location field and scroll on down.
