Santa Ynez River - Santa Barbara, CA

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
The Santa Ynez River in Santa Barbara County offers seasonal freshwater fishing in one of Southern California’s most ecologically diverse watersheds. Anglers will find two distinct fishing zones: the upper river above Lake Cachuma and the lower section downstream of the dam.

The upper Santa Ynez, accessible via Los Padres National Forest, supports native rainbow trout. These small but wild fish are best caught using dry flies or small nymphs on barbless hooks. The area is popular with fly-fishers seeking a remote backcountry experience. Catch-and-release is recommended to protect this sensitive population.

Below Cachuma Dam, the lower Santa Ynez River is occasionally stocked with hatchery trout during suitable flow conditions. Fishing access is limited to specific stretches such as Hilton Creek and the Alisal Reach, which are part of steelhead restoration efforts. This zone is tightly regulated, with frequent seasonal closures to protect endangered southern steelhead.

Other species in the river include green sunfish, carp, and Sacramento pikeminnow, especially in slower-moving stretches. Access is variable, with much of the lower river crossing private land.

Fishing here is heavily dependent on water availability and conservation measures. A California fishing license is required, and anglers must follow all CDFW regulations.

The Santa Ynez River offers wild trout angling in a serene, natural setting—ideal for conservation-minded and adventurous anglers.
