A huge sturgeon that was released before weighing could possibly have established a new lake record for the species. Bass angler Rick Karlovich of Orange was tossing a plastic crawdad from shore with only 6-pound test line, when the monster sturgie hit. Karlovich battled the diamondside for 35-40 minutes before beaching it and snapping a photo prior to a quick release as lake regulations require. “It burnt the **** out of my drag”, quipped veteran basser Karlovich.

Sturgeon have been planted into Irvine Lake several times over the years, and a moderate resident population exists, though anglers rarely target them. From time to time, even catfish anglers using heavy tackle report hooking huge fish that they have no chance of stopping. Every few years, some lucky angler manages to land one, and some monumental battles have lasted for hours before the fish ultimately escaped.

The official lake record stands at 49 pounds, and was landed by Ronson “Catmando” Smothers, who also holds the lake record for blue catfish. However, a couple of large specimens landed in recent years have appeared to be in the 55-60 pound class before being released, and the big one Karlovich landed could potentially have pushed 75 pounds or more, as it was exceptionally plump.

In other action, bass anglers continued to do well on 2-4 pound largemouth on a variety of plastics and crankbaits. Best bet for successful bassing was to hike to the less pressured areas of the shoreline. Catfish anglers found generally slow action on 3-6 pound whiskerfish at the west shore, using mackerel or nightcrawlers.

Families with children age 12 and under found fair numbers of 1-3 pound catfish in the Kids Lagoon. Daily limit in the Kids Lagoon is 3 fish, but the main lake is currently offering “no limit” fishing on catfish and trout. Tentative last day of fishing is Feb. 28, and a 50-percent off everything in the Pro Shop sale is currently underway. Anglers are reminded that no watercraft are permitted. Operating hours are Wednesdays through Sundays, 6 AM to 4 PM, and closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.

Catfish anglers did not tangle with any of the bigger kitties at Irvine Lake this week, but some eating-size whiskerfish were caught on nightcrawlers or mackerel at the west shore, near the dam, and at Rocky Point. Team 57 members also reported that trout fishing was slow, but a few nice holdover Nebraska Tailwalkers were caught on nightcrawlers at Rocky Point. Bass anglers continued to do pretty well, as long as they keep moving around to the less-pressured areas of...... Read More
