Lake Isabella is currently sitting at approximately 36% of capacity, with water temperatures ranging between 50 and 55 degrees. Crappie fishing has been very good, with fish holding tight to structure and biting well on mini jigs and small to medium shiners. The winter bass bite is in full effect, with anglers reporting more quality fish than numbers. Most of the bass activity is coming from 30 to 35 feet of water around Rocky Point, Piney Point, and Engineer’s Point. Anglers are finding success working deep-diving crankbaits, large worms, slow-fished swimbaits, jigs, and creature baits along deeper structure. Catfish action improved this week, both in numbers and overall size, with productive baits including dip baits, mackerel, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers. Trout fishing remains steady, with fish being caught on garlic-scented baits, spinners, mousetails, and worms. The CDFW has a scheduled trout plant planned for the end of the month, which should help keep the trout bite consistent.
