Corona Lake has continue to crank out an incredible number of rainbow trout for anglers fishing from shore or boat. The lake has cleared up from the rain runoff with crystal clear water in the upper end of the lake where the stream is flowing in right now, and this is where most of the boat anglers have been focusing their efforts. Shore anglers are finding nearly as good action at the dam, along the south shore, and right behind the bait shop. The top action has been on inflated nightcrawlers with garlic, floating baits in green, chartreuse, rainbow, and pink. The small trout worms and Lip RipperZ jigs are also getting quite a few fish. Top rainbow reported this week was an 11-pounder that topped off an 11-fish, 30-pound stringer weighed in by Mercedes and David Lopez and Antonio Gomez, all of Gardena, fishing nightcrawlers from a boat. Seven-pound rainbows were reported by Tim Williams, Long Beach, on a wax worm at the dam, while Josh, Caleb, Victoria, and Jacob Miller, all Anaheim, anchored their 14-pound stringer with a seven-pounder caught on garlic dough bait from shore. Jeff Ortiz, Brea, had six-pound and three-pound trout on nightcrawlers at the dam, and a 5 1/2-pounder anchored a 49-pound, 19-fish stringer landed by Anthony Colace, Andrew Moran, Raul Moran, and Jessie Frausti, all Corona, and all fishing from a boat at the inlet with garlic-laced dough bait.

There were a number of quality stringers this past week. Sydney, Emlyn, Joshua, and Nathaniel Aurelio, all Chula Vista, teamed up to land nine rainbows for 28 1/2 pounds, including a 5 1/2-pounder. They were fishing from a pontoon boat with nightcrawlers doused with Eagle Claw Nitro Grease. Cliff, Keanu, and Chris Mukai, all Diamond Bar, had 10 rainbows for 24 pounds on green worms. Walt Heins, Downey, and Jerry Sayas, Temecula, had 10 rainbows for 27 pounds, while Richard, Anthony, Dominic, and Vinnie Carillo, Victorville, landed eight rainbows for 19 3/4 pounds. Dave Lopez, Long Beach, had a pretty typical five-fish limit that weighed 15 pounds with a four-pounder his top fish, all on green dough bait at the dam. While few anglers are targeting the catfish or sturgeon right now, Jose Valladares, Santa Ana, landed an 8 1/2-pound sturgeon on a nightcrawler. Trout wee planted twice last week, with both Nebraska Tailwalkers and Jess Ranch steelhead on Wednesday. This week, there will be a huge plant of Sierra Bows on Thursday, including more super trophy trout to 20 pounds and better. There will also be a private Team 57 night fishing tournament beginning 5 p.m.. Saturday, Jan. 22. Anglers can join Team 57 by going to FishingNetwork.net for more details. Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes is $22. Seniors pay only $20. All of these passes have a five-fish limit. For kids 4 to 13, a three-fish pass is just $9. There are 24-hour passes available the weekend nearest the full moon each month with the next overnight fishing set for Feb. 18-19. These passes cost $60 and anglers can bring a spouse and up to three kids to help fill the 24-hour pass 15-fish limit. Camping at Corona Lake is also free with a 24-hour pass.
