Cachuma Lake in Santa Barbara County is a 3,100-acre reservoir known for its productive trout, bass, and panfish fisheries. Located in the scenic Santa Ynez Valley, the lake offers year-round fishing and excellent facilities for both families and serious anglers.
Rainbow trout are stocked regularly from fall through spring and are best caught trolling flashers with nightcrawlers or casting from shore with PowerBait. Trout concentrate near the marina, Harvey Cove, and Cachuma Bay, particularly during cooler months.
Largemouth bass fishing peaks in spring, with fish spawning in coves such as Johnson Bay and Jack Rabbit Flats. Plastics, jigs, and crankbaits are effective. Smallmouth and spotted bass are also present and respond well to finesse techniques around rocky structure and deep drop-offs.
Crappie and bluegill provide action in spring and summer. Crappie are caught near submerged brush using jigs or minnows, while bluegill favor worms near docks. Channel catfish bite best on cut bait during summer nights, especially in muddy-bottomed coves.
Boating is allowed, with rentals and multiple launch ramps available. Swimming and float tubing are prohibited due to water quality regulations. A California fishing license and lake permit are required.
Cachuma Lake’s blend of cold- and warm-water fisheries, scenic terrain, and modern amenities makes it one of Southern California’s most complete freshwater angling destinations.
