Diamond Valley Lake (DVL) in Hemet, CA, stands out as one of the premier freshwater fishing destinations in all of Southern California. Spanning more than 4,500 surface acres and plunging to depths over 250 feet, DVL is a modern, man-made reservoir managed by the Metropolitan Water District. It offers a high-quality multispecies fishery, with largemouth bass, striped bass, rainbow trout, channel catfish, bluegill, and redear sunfish all flourishing in its clear, nutrient-rich waters.

Largemouth bass fishing at DVL is exceptional, with numerous double-digit fish caught each year. Spring and fall are the most productive seasons, with anglers having success using jigs, soft plastics, and swimbaits near submerged structure, rocky outcrops, and deep ledges. Striped bass, another top-tier gamefish in the lake, are often caught while trolling with umbrella rigs, large swimbaits, or cut bait in deeper water, particularly during early morning hours or over submerged bait schools.

Seasonal rainbow trout stockings during the winter months provide additional opportunities, with trout often found near the marina and dam areas. In summer, anglers turn to bluegill and redear sunfish using light tackle, and channel catfish can be caught with cut baits fished near the bottom.

Boats are allowed but must pass rigorous quagga mussel inspections. Kayaks and float tubes are permitted, and there is limited but accessible shoreline fishing near the marina. Anglers must carry a valid California fishing license and pay applicable lake use fees. Diamond Valley Lake is a destination-level fishery that consistently delivers for serious anglers.
