Spring has sprung, and lake conditions are changing rapidly. That means the bite is changing quickly, too.
Early in the mornings trout are still coming in close to shore. However, as the shallows warm in the sun, they're getting pushed out to deeper water by the larger and more predatory fish. Carolina rigs with floating baits on a 2 to 3 foot leader are still your best bet. Just be sure to adjust your casting distance as the day progresses. There is still a little lure action happening here and there, too, so don't leave the spoons, spinners, and mini jigs behind. Work the shoreline between Juniper Point and the observatory or between Windy Point and North Shore Landing for best results.
Speaking of larger and more predatory fish, the bass and catfish bites have fired up as well. Focus on the warmer east end of the lake these guys.
The bass will take any number of finesse techniques including dropshots, ned rigs, neko rigs, shaky heads and the like. They're also lashing out at reaction baits such as jerk baits, square bills, spinnerbaits, and underspins.
For the catfish, try setting up a Santee Cooper rig with some mackerel or shrimp. This rig keeps the bait up off the bottom which actually increases your chances of getting bit. Stop by the shop to learn how it works.
Also, there's good news for the carp shooters out there. MWD has already put out the carp bin for the season, so you can responsibly dispose of your kills a little earlier than usual this year.
