Lake Isabella dropped to 46% capacity this week as water releases continue. Summer bass fishing remains productive, particularly throughout the North Fork area up toward the Cemetery. Early mornings are producing solid topwater action before the bite shifts deeper along points in water down to 20 feet. Oxblood and purple worms have been effective, while flukes, spinnerbaits, and Senkos in watermelon red or shad patterns continue to produce consistently. Many of the better-quality bass are being caught on craw-pattern crankbaits and the “Rusty Special” 1st Gen spinnerbait. Crappie fishing also remains strong, with small live shiners and 2- to 3-inch Keitechs working best. Kayak anglers report that crappie are holding tight to submerged tree trunks and suspending in deeper water, generally 15 to 20 feet below the surface. Catfishing is red hot, with Triple S bait and cut bait producing fast action and quality fish for both shore and boat anglers. Surprisingly, the trout bite is still holding up well. Shore anglers are finding success with cheese- or garlic-scented PowerBait, while trollers continue to catch fish on Tasmanian Devils and Flicker Shads.
